From Bunkers to Beach Hikes: A Wild Week in Albania This past week we rolled into Albania—land of epic mountains, Cold War secrets, and more speed humps than we care to count… We kicked things off with a solid dose of nature: climbing up winding mountain roads where goats have right of way and your van gets a free spine realignment from the potholes. Then, just as we started to feel smug about our off-grid mountain skills, Albania delivered 100 mm of rain. One hundred! Our cozy van suddenly became even more cozy… After a few days lying low the sun came back—and so did the adventure. We explored some Cold War relics, including a secret underground tunnel built to shelter Albania’s communist leadership in the event of nuclear war. (Just them 🙈) We also found some seriously cool submarine bunkers carved right into the coastal cliffs—James Bond villain vibes. Between the epic scenery, we managed to sample some seriously tasty local dishes—think lamb in yogurt & grilled veggies 🥕 . We also got a crash course in traditional Albanian farming: shepherds herding flocks through tiny mountain villages & horses pulling carts. Speaking of “tiny,” the roads here are next-level narrow—think driveway-sized mountain passes with sheer drops, blind corners, and surprise herds of livestock. Add in a thousand speed humps (we stopped counting), and you’ve got a driving experience that’s part Mario Kart, part survival training. Next on the agenda: the Peaks of the Balkans hike, which crosses Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. So we’re swapping van life for trail life (and probably blisters).
