After completing Portugals fisherman’s trail we jumped on a plane and flew 2 hours west to the Portuguese island of Madeira — an island rising from the Atlantic, and described as the Hawaii of Europe with its rugged terrain, mild climate and volcanic beaches. Over 6 days we enjoyed multiple day hikes, where we followed the levadas, ancient irrigation channels impressively carved into the mountains sides. We also passed through lush forests and walked into the clouds enveloping the exposed mountain peaks - even in the hideous weather it was incredible to see. As we explored the islands nature we fell in love with the sound of rushing streams, the scent of pine and wet earth, and waterfalls tumbling from impossible heights — the landscape was truly stunning! We also slowed the pace and traded mountain mist for cobbled streets, indulgent food including the famous Madeira wine & Madeira cake, and quaint buildings by spending time in the many towns dotted around the island, and then Funchal, the island’s capital — a warm, vibrant & alive city that we loved exploring over a few days.
