Omar Vazquez is a local innovator and entrepreneur in Mexico. Omar took something that everyone thought was a problem and turned it into a solution. He then took the solution and used it for people who need it the most. His journey began in 2015 when sargassum seaweed first began washing up on the shores of the Riviera Maya. Omar saw an opportunity and within a year he was employing about 300 families to clean the beaches for local hotels and resorts. But he didn’t stop there. Omar soon created his very first “Sargablock” -- an adobe building block made from sargassum. He created a machine that can turn out 1,000 blocks a day. Omar’s vision uses the sargassum on the beaches as a low-cost building material to build affordable housing throughout the Riviera Maya, allowing families to live in their own homes. This innovation is special because it goes beyond turning a profit and allows him to give back to his communities. His story is a powerful one and can be an inspiration to other innovators and potential investors. The United Nations Development Program in Mexico, including its Accelerator Lab team, has been involved in identifying local solutions to pressing developing challenges like Omar’s. There is a need to amplify projects like Omar's and to share what we've learned from him.
