In this video, we explain a procedure for designing a phase lead controller and we solve an example of designing a phase lead compensator (controller) in MATLAB. We explain how to find the gain crossover frequency of the phase lead compensator such that the phase lead compensator achieves the desired phase margin requirements. Phase lead compensators are usually designed such that the desired phase margin is achieved in practice. By increasing the phase margin, we increase the damping ratio of the closed loop system, and in that way, we achieve a more stable step response.
