All the paints and pigments I use are mixed with additives to help them flow more easily. All my colors are stored and mixed in squeeze bottles for ease of use. I advise a well-ventilated room and those with respiratory issues to avoid or use a respirator. If I am using Prizm pour acrylic colors and Primary Elements Pigment powders by Colour Arte… Recipe 1) is for general pouring. The Prizm Pour Acrylic paints are mixed with Vivid Poly Pour( both available from Colour Arte )to both extend and help them flow more easily. In a 4oz container begin by adding 25% GAC 800, fill with Vivid poly pour to just more than halfway full. Fill the remainder color. Transfer to a larger container( 8 oz.?) to mix and pour into a bottle. If you are using Floetrol I recommend(at most) an estimated 10% of the total already mixed. A squirt of distilled water to thin if desired. Recently I have begun to add a squirt of Jo Sonja gloss varnish for shine instead of water to thin. Recipe 2) Best for bloom colors)- for Vivid enamel use a conveniently sized container that will allow you to include all your ingredients and have room to stir without spilling. Begin by adding 20-25% GAC 800 from Golden. Fill to just past half full with Vivid enamel. Add color to fill the rest of the way to the top with color. Mix thoroughly, and add a squirt of Jo Sonja varnish for shine and to aid cell production. Mix again. Add a squirt of distilled water to thin to your liking. Transfer to a larger mixing/pouring vessel. I suggest you use one you can easily fill a bottle that has a pour spout. Transfer to a squeeze bottle with a small single glass marble in the bottom. Remove any residual mixture using a small silicone spatula. Meeden black acrylic paint(used often as a base layer)is mixed with a pouring medium created from 3/4 Floetrol and 1/4 GAC 800 by Golden(RECOMMENDED) which is my standard mixture when using any Acrylic brands other than Colourarte.* Into the Meeden is added with an added 1-2% distilled water This Meeden mixture is also useful as an excellent swipe cell-maker. My ratios of Meeden to Pouring medium start at 50-50. A propane torch is cautiously passed over the surface of the canvas to release any air in the paint that might result in bubbles forming while the artwork dries or leaving pockmarks if left to pop on their own. Warming the paint will also often encourage patterns to emerge because the paint in combination with the Floetrol used in my pouring mix encourages cells to form. The cell accelerators used here to create a blooming effect are Masters Touch Dioxazine Purple and a Pebeo acrylic iridescent Tube paint Gold Iridescent 1/3 added into 2/3 Aussie Floetrol. Heavier viscosity recipes work too. I like 50-50 also. The usual Cell activators are Amsterdam Black or White mixed into Aussie Floetrol, estimated 3/4 Aussie Floetrol1/4 paint, alternative mixtures can also be a half and half mixture of Aussie Floetrol… depending on your preferences. Other colors can be used as cell activators. An alternative Cell activation recipe using American Floetrol (same ratios)must include 10 drops of Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner added for every 2 ounces of mixed paint. Other recipes for drops added may vary. This works for me. I strongly recommend adding GAC 800 by Golden as an addition to all colors (25%) to avoid crazing. This is especially true if you are using the bloom style of pouring paint if you have not allowed the paint to stretch as far as it will go. All the paints I use are acrylic paints mixed with additives to help them flow more easily. Every day I learn new things.
