April 28, 2023 This engaging conversation explores the intersection of art and architecture in Alexandria. As part of April's Architecture Month, Alexandria's Office of the Arts and AIA Northern Virginia were proud to present "Placemaking & Storytelling: The Intersection of Art & Architecture in Alexandria," featuring artist and architect Nina Cooke John. Discover how art and architecture intersect here in our backyards of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. This conversation, led by Audra Herriges, an architect at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and chair of the AIA Northern Virginia and AIA Virginia Historic Resources Committee, will explore how both art and architecture can share the narrative of the past while also creating new spaces and environments with historic reparations in mind. Cooke John's latest public art project, "Two Boxes of Oranges and Admonia Jackson," is part of the Site See series produced by the Office of the Arts. The installation tells a layered story of Alexandria's history, and serves as a catalyst for discussion on how art and architecture can come together to create meaningful places that inspire and connect communities. Dayton Schroeter, an architect at SmithGroup, leading a studio focusing on Design Justice advocacy will discuss and show how to use design in the built environment as a tool to advance social equity. Architects have an important role and responsibility in creating spaces of racial, cultural, and class equity. Nina Cooke John is the founding principal of Studio Cooke John Architecture and Design, a multidisciplinary design studio that values placemaking as a way to transform relationships between people and the built environment.
