🇯🇵 This is the third update in our ongoing first-year retirement tax story. As of February 20, 2026, our U.S. filings—both federal and state—have been completed, submitted, and received. 2025 was our first full year of retirement and my first full year back in Japan after eleven years living in the United States. Naturally, that makes this tax season different from any I’ve handled before. With the U.S. side now in motion, I’ve begun the Japan process. This week, I engaged a Japanese tax firm based in Sendai, with an office in Tokyo, and had a 30-minute consultation with one of their English-language tax specialists. I’ll receive a quote shortly for full representation. Given the complexity of being a U.S. citizen and a Japan resident in my first retirement year, I’ve decided to approach this carefully and professionally rather than guess my way through it. My plan—whether perfectly efficient or not—is straightforward: complete the U.S. filing first, finalize the Japan filing next, and then reconcile any differences if needed. If adjustments are required on the U.S. side after Japan is complete, I’ll amend accordingly. This isn’t tax advice. It’s simply a status report from the middle of a cross-border retirement transition—shared in real time. ➡️ Get your copy of Going Alone here (hardcover edition recommended): https://a.co/d/6SORY8N 🌐 Website: https://goingalone.org 📧 Email: dinnerbytheriver@gmail.com 🌀 Discord: / discord 👍 Support my endeavors on Patreon: / softypapa Be safe… But not too safe.
