My main moveset was composed of Earthquake, Surging Strikes, Power-Up Punch, and Ice Punch. Earthquake is great and all, but it takes a while before Quagsire can learn it (level 52). Before that, the only Ground-type move that it can learn by itself is Mud Shot, which is a mid-powered Special move, and the chubby boy works best as a Physical attacker. So, before level 52, if one wants a decent Physical Ground-type move, they can only hope to find one in the shop. Good luck with that! In my run, the best I could find was Stomping Tantrum, and I replaced ASAP with Earthquake. The Surging Strikes Egg Move is by far the best Water-type Physical move that Quagsire can learn, thanks to its guaranteed triple critical hits. It's also priceless in grinding opponents with multiple HP bars! Until level 52, it's by far Wooper's and Quagsire's best move, but since it only has 5 PPs, prepare to spend a lot of money on Ethers if you're going to use it as your main attacking move. The chubby boy has a base Attack of 85, and the only setup options at its disposal are, yet again, random TMs found as rewards: Power-Up Punch and Curse. Since Quagsire is very slow already, Curse is quite compelling. In my run, I wasn't able to find its TM in the shop even once, but I found Power-Up Punch's TM, and it served me very well. In the late game, I was even able to win a Multi Lens during the 'Fun and Games' Mystery Encounter, which basically transformed Power-Up Punch into a damaging version of Swords Dance! In my moveset, I always had a coverage move against Grass-type. For most of the run, it was the Sizzly Slide Egg Move. Since it always burns the target, it was also quite useful to reduce the damage done by physical attackers. In the second half of my run, I was able to find Ice Punch's TM in the shop, and I preferred it over Sizzly Slide because it had more power, but it also provided coverage against flying Dragon-types. Quagsire would have had a very hard time doing damage to them without Ice Punch. Speaking of the chubby boy's Ability, I think that the most useful one is by far Water Absorb. Without it, Quagsire would take neutral damage from Water, so it lures many more Water-type attacks than other Water-types with that Ability. Also, the more immunity a Pokémon has, the better! Wooper's Passive Ability is Water Veil, which prevents burns, while Quagsire's one is Comatose, which prevents sleep. None of them proved itself useful in my run, but it was better to have them than not, I guess. Although the chubby boy's base Speed cries for help, it's too low to gain concrete benefits from a Jolly Nature (+ Speed, - Special Attack). So with the Nature, I rather chose to manage as much as possible the damage that it received from often moving last by giving it a Careful Nature, which improves its Special Defence at the expense of its Special Attack. The reason was that Quagsire is a little unskewed toward Defence, since it has a base Defence of 85 and a base Special Defence of 65, so a Careful Nature could have made it more balanced and less vulnerable to special attacks. Passive HP recovery items—especially Leftovers and Shell Bells—were essential to succeed in this solo run. Without them, because of Quagsire's slowness, it takes too much cumulative damage against full teams, and it's at constant risk of dying from excessive quantities of it. I had to retry a lot of hard fights and reload the game a lot to get better rewards in the shop (reloading the game doesn't change the rewards in the shop, but it gives me a better awareness of the shop content in each wave and better rewards in the long run). On this run, from wave 1 to wave 120, I played PokéRogue version 1.11.11, and from wave 121 onwards, I played version 1.11.12. 00:00:00 Start 00:00:15 W8 Rival Ivy 00:01:07 W18 'Uncommon Breed' Lunatone 00:01:41 W25 Quagsire 00:01:57 W55 Rival Ivy 00:02:40 W60 Boss Genesect 00:02:57 W64 Flare Grunts 00:03:36 W66 Flare Admin Bryony 00:04:29 W74 Common Shiny Linoone 00:04:31 W76 'Berries Abound' Darmanitan 00:04:46 W80 Gym Leader Whitney 00:05:55 W81 Common Shiny Pangoro 00:06:00 W95 Rival Ivy 00:07:22 W114 Flare Admin Aliana 00:08:22 W115 Flare Boss Lysandre 00:10:32 W145 Rival Ivy 00:11:56 W159 1st prize @ Fun And Games! 00:12:18 W164 Flare Admin Xerosic 00:13:50 W165 Flare Boss Lysandre (rematch) 00:15:16 W182 Elite Four Sidney 00:17:18 W184 Elite Four Phoebe 00:18:55 W186 Elite Four Glacia 00:21:04 W188 Elite Four Drake 00:22:28 W190 Champion Wallace 00:24:10 W195 Rival Ivy 00:26:13 W200 Eternatus
