Can the use of mass timber on a project result in a net shorter project? Or can it result in an additional story but stay within the same overall building height? What is the cost savings of a building that is 4 or 5 feet shorter than originally expected? This video takes a deeper dive into what may be a commonly overlooked benefit associated with the use of mass timber: a reduction in building height due to relatively thinner floor and roof assemblies. Combining finish with structure as mass timber does not only results in cost and embodied carbon savings due to the use of fewer materials, it can also result in a thinner floor profile. This can mean that floor to floor heights are reduced and therefore overall building height is reduced when compared to framing the same building with other structural materials.
