This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Nicolas talks about the link between funfair (fairground, fêtes foraines) and innovation. The characteristics of funfair innovation are fun + experimentation + public participation; this is a good mode to create engaging, beautiful and inspiring usage of technology for tomorrow. Historically, fairground people participated in the diffusion of several important innovation like elevators (US amusement parks in the 19th Century), the cinema (nomadic cinemas in the countryside in Europe) and video-games (funfair had arcade video games in the 1970s and 1980s). Can we use the same strategy today? Nicolas Nova is Professor at the Geneva University of Arts and Design (HEAD – Genève) and founder of the Near Future Laboratory, a design studio based in Europe and California. His work is about exploring and understanding people’s needs, motivations and contexts to map new design opportunities and help designers and engineers. Nicolas applies this in the domains of video games, mobile and location-based media as well as networked objects/robots. He holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL, Switzerland) lectures and leads workshops on the intersections of art, design, technology and the near-future possibilities for new social-technical interaction rituals. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
