Rushdah Hartley – Evidence-based Science Allied health professionals often acknowledge the importance of evidence- based practice (EBP) and recognise that it is the preferred way to conduct intervention in speech- language pathology in general and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in particular. AAC falls under the banner of Assistive Technology (AT) which is defined as any equipment or product, whether acquired commercially, modified or customised which is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. AAC can be defined as an intervention which allows people with temporary and permanent complex communication needs (CCN) to create shared meaning with their communication partners. An estimated 97 million persons with disabilities in the world would benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to improve involvement in daily activities. Evidence- based practice within allied health thus emphasizes three, important elements through; 1) research evidence, clinical/ educational expertise and relevant stakeholder perspectives that all need to be integrated through the EBP process. This webinar will explore the field of Assistive Technology with a special focus on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for persons with disabilities. This webinar delves into various aspects of EBP in the clinical decision- making process which ultimately impacts and transforms the lives of persons with disabilities. Rushdah Hartley is a qualified Speech- Language Pathologist after graduating from the University of Cape Town in 2009. She also holds a Masters in Early Childhood Intervention (MECI) from the University of Pretoria. Rushdah has over 10 years’ clinical experience within the public (health, education), private and corporate sectors. She is passionate about working with persons with disabilities and has a special interest in Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) and Augmentative and AlternativeCommunication (AAC).
