This is a seminar talk by Professor Silvia Dalla talking about her work on energetic particles from the Sun. The talk is aimed at A Level students. Eruptions at the Sun eject huge clouds of magnetised gas and highly energetic particles into space. If these particles hit Earth, we may experience Space Weather, whose effects range from disruption to GPS and electrical grids to enhanced radiation risk to satellites and humans in space. In addition, solar particles pose a risk to aviation systems, as demonstrated by the recent recall of 6000 Airbus planes. This talk will tackle the following questions: How do these energetic particles travel from the Sun to near Earth space? How accurately can we forecast their arrival and manage the associated radiation risks? Prof Siliva Dalla is a Professor of Solar Physics at the University of Lancashire. Her research focuses on how particles are accelerated during solar eruptions and propagate through space to reach Earth. Her work includes developing Space Weather forecasting models.
