Jeff Gordon 1991 Year in Review Episode 1 of 4 Watch Jeff Gordon's rookie year in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series during 'Jeff Gordon 1991 Year in Review' Lee Morris, Ford's racing manager of performance operations, saw Jeff Gordon's second place qualifying for the October 1990 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series race at Rockingham. Without any plans for 1991 since Hugh Connerty's team was disbanding, Gordon with John Bickford and ESPN Saturday Night Thunder's Larry Nuber at the end of 1990 went to see Morris and his director Michael Kranefuss at their Ford offices in Michigan. Nuber had made a video of Gordon's career which was shown to Morris and Kranefuss. At the same time Mark Martin, current driver for Roush Racing in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, was also driving the #1 Carolina Ford Dealers Ford Thunderbird for Bill Davis Racing in Busch Grand National. Martin had aspirations to start his own Busch team for 1991, so he announced that he was not returning to Bill Davis' car. Morris contacted Davis and suggested that he should replace Martin with Gordon for 1991. Davis was not sure about this. Gordon and two other drivers were then allowed to test Davis' car at Rockingham in December 1990. Davis after the test liked Gordon. Morris also told Davis that if he picked Gordon, Ford would offer more sponsorship money and factory assistance to Davis' team. Davis then offered Gordon a one year contract for 1991. In the contract it stated that Gordon would earn half of whatever money the car made. Andy Graves who was still living with Gordon at the Bickford house in Pittsboro met Ken Howes earlier in 1990 in nearby Indianapolis. Howes worked for Hendrick Motorsports and got Graves to come work for them in their shop in Charlotte, NC. At the end of 1990 Gordon and Graves both moved to Charlotte where they got an apartment together so they could both be close to Bill Davis Racing and Hendrick Motorsports for their jobs. On January 19, 1991 Gordon led the Team Indiana drivers at the USAC Hoosier Dome Invitational in Indianapolis driving a Beast midget chassis owned by Rollie Helmling. Three Time World of Outlaws Champion Sammy Swindell, NASCAR Winston Cup Series Winner Ken Schrader and Kara Hendrick also competed in the event. In October 1991 Hendrick died in a USAC midget crash. Gordon is then selected as the Hoosier Auto Racing Fans (HARF) Driver of the Year at their annual banquet in Indianapolis on January 20th. A week later he accepts the award for being the 1990 Midget Series Champion at the USAC National Awards Dinner in Indianapolis. While competing in Busch Grand National during 1991, Gordon also drove Fred Ede Jr.'s USAC Silver Crown Series car for a second year. Ede is the owner of M & L Plumbing in Fresno, CA. Of the few cars that Bill Davis Racing had in their shop, some were of the current Ford Thunderbird body style and some still had the 1988 Ford Thunderbird body which was smaller and noticeably different. Throughout 1991 Gordon raced both body styles in Busch Grand National. At Richmond the doors of Gordon's car were changed from #1 to #4, since Tony Hirschman was also there in the #1 SKF Bearings Oldsmobile Cutlass. Gordon was also youngest driver ever voted into the twelve member American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association All American (AARWBA) team for 1990 and 1991 which included Dale Earnhardt, Harry Gant, Michael Andretti and Rick Mears. 0:15 HARF Awards Banquet (Driver of the Year) 0:26 USAC National Awards Dinner (Champion) 0:37 USAC Silver Crown Series Copper World Classic - In Memory of Danny Milburn (Win) 0:48 Daytona Qualifying 1:03 Richmond (17th) 14:26 Rockingham 17:39 Martinsville (14th) 21:14 Volusia County (13th) 27:17 Hickory NASCAR Busch Grand National Series Team: Owner Bill Davis (Bill Davis Racing) Crew Chief/Engine Builder Keith Simmons NASCAR Busch Grand National Series Teammate: #01 Mark Martin (March Hickory) USAC Silver Crown Series Team: Owner Fred Ede Jr. (Ede Motorsports) DISCLAIMER Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for 'fair use' for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research.
