We join Prussian Class T 9.3 No.7348 "Kattowitz" at Hille station for an extended trip past Minden-Oberstadt station, over the impressive Weser river bridge and onto the railway's junction with the Deutsche Bahn. Our attractive steam locomotive and its train of beautifully restored period carriages was waiting at Hille station having run round its train ready for the journey to Minden-Oberstadt station along the normally freight only line to Minden junction. I used Wikipedia to find information about the Minden Museum Railway. The Minden Museum Railway (German: Museumseisenbahn Minden) or MEM society was founded in 1977 with the aim of preserving historic railway vehicles to operate on the Minden District Railway (Mindener Kreisbahn or MKB). It was not long after the society was established that it ran its train on the line. Initially the museums vehicles were housed in a carriage shed at the MKB's old locomotive depot (Bahnbetriebswerk) located at Minden Stadt station. The museum's trains run on the lines owned by the Minden District Railway and Wittlage District Railway. The MEM gradually took over MKB's lines and the society moved to its current headquarter at Minden-Oberstadt station because its original depot was closed and sold for development. Our locomotive for this trip was No. 7348 “Kattowitz” a member of the Prussian P 8 class. I am in debt the Railway Touring Company tour booklet for the following information about our locomotive. Prussian P 8 Class locomotives were also known G 8.1 and they were built primarily for the Prussian State Railways, although they worked in Germany and other European countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries The designation “Kattowitz” likely refers to the city of Katowice once in Prussia and now a major industrial centre located in modern day Poland. The T 9.3 Class were know for their reliability and versatility, being used on both freight and passenger trains. The locomotive's distinctive appearance and history has made them popular with both railway enthusiasts and historians.
