Ser Dunk offers one more bow before starting to step out, but Baelor clears his throat. Baelor: Ser Duncan, was it? I hope you understand that knights require a squire as well. Someone to tend to their horses, polish their armor, and assist them in preparing themselves for battle. Dunk: I do, my prince. I have found a boy who has proven able enough. Baelor: You found a boy capable of doing all that? Laughs. Perhaps squires are growing from trees now. Was that little bald-headed boy my guards were walking around with? Dunk: Your guards have a good eye, my prince. Aye, that’s him. Baelor: And would you be so kind as to tell me where you found this squire of yours? Dunk: By an inn not far from here. About a few hours' ride from Ashford, my prince. He barely notices the flash in Baelor’s eyes and the flicker of concern crossing Mekkar's face. Dunk opens his mouth to ask, but both lords lean closer to whisper to one another, making it clear that whatever they say is to be kept private. The hedge knight forces himself to be calm, shifting from side to side until they finally nod their heads, and Baelor asks to be taken to him. Confused, but he can see that the suggestion is a command wrapped around a courtesy, Dunk says he will be honored to take him to the boy. Taking Mekkar and a small guard, Baelor follows Dunk to their camp outside the tourney grounds. The Hand’s brother spends this time grumbling that they must spend their time away walking through the wilderness, but Baelor remains insistent that there might be more to this. As they push through the thickets, they come upon an old elm tree. Underneath it, a boy sits, roasting a trout over a small fire. He gasps and jumps to his feet when he sees Dunk and the royal prince approaching. Any squire would be surprised to see the royal family making their way to their camp, but there was something else in Egg’s eyes. Fear and familiarity. And when Dunk swings his head towards the prince’s, their expression mirrors him. There is a knowing smile on Baelor’s face, while Mekkar is stormy. Mekkar: Aegon, just what do you think you are doing with this rogue? Dunk: Aegon? My prince, I don’t understand. This is my squire- He pauses as he’s about to say his name. Egg…short for Aegon. Realization dawns on him, and he falls to his knees. Mekkar rounds on him and glares. Mekkar: So this farce is over. Care to explain why you happen to have my son with you, Hedge Knight? Baelor: Peace, brother. This seems to be some misunderstanding. Ser Duncan, can you please explain to me why you have the prince with you? Dunk stares at little Aegon, regarding him in a new light. For the first time, he sees things that he should have seen earlier. He notices how unusually blue his eyes are, close to purple. He also realizes just why he has no hair. A child walking around with white hair would be a giveaway of who he was. He likely shaved his head in order to prevent people from recognizing him. And when he looks at him, Egg suddenly has a hard time meeting his gaze, whereas before he used to do that so readily. Belatedly, he realizes that they are still expecting an answer and quickly bows his head, explaining his encounter in the inn. He mentions how a drunk man approached him and warned him to stay away, and how he found Egg in the stables, playing with his horse and armor. Mekkar frowns as he hears about the drunk man and asks Dunk to describe his appearance. He says the man had sandy hair, a thin beard, and a sallow look about him. He glances towards Baelor, who offers a nod. Mekkar: Daeron…that great fool. Baelor: Drunk again, it would seem. Perhaps it was a mistake to bring him here, but as to the matter at hand, it seems that Ser Duncan was as much a victim here as young Egg, perhaps more. Mekkar: A victim? He stole my son from an inn. Baelor: The situation is far from ideal, but it seems to me Egg wanted to be stolen. Even you said it yourself, Egg lies often. Tell me, boy. Did you lie when you told this young knight who you were? Egg: Well, no. Not really. He thought I was a stable boy, and I never corrected him. Baelor: That’s close enough to a lie to me. Well then, did he mistreat you on the way here, or do you think he is a good man? #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
