A very switched on and focused KC-135 pilot of the 351st Air Refuelling Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, is about to take off but aborts due to birds hanging around on the runway. This is another perfect example of why 'Sterile Cockpit' is initiated and the fully focused perception of the pilot. Sometimes, it isn't as easy as scaring the birds away in this situation, you could actually make it worse, especially if they fly towards the aircraft. On analysis, whilst the KC-135 was cleared 'Line up and wait', it is at that point that the 3 birds landed on the runway, and not before. As the pilot was cleared for takeoff, the pilot luckily spotted them. A bird being sucked into the engine/s can not only damage the engine, but can cause severe consequences (including loss of life to crew) especially if the aircraft was to get airborne. Birdstrikes are most common on takeoff and landings. WHAT IS 'STERILE COCKPIT' Sterile Cockpit is a rule in aviation (both civilian and military) that requires pilots to avoid all non-essential conversations and activities during critical phases of flight, which is typically from surface to 10,000 feet. It is during these times that the crew must focus only on tasks essential for the safe operation of the aircraft, such as taxi, takeoff, and landing. This procedure is designed to increase crew alertness and minimize distractions during the most crucial moments of a flight. And this shows why sterile cockpit is crucial. The 100th Air Refueling Wing is RAF Mildenhall's current host wing and the only permanent U.S. air refueling wing in the European theatre, activated here on February 1, 1992. The wing provides the critical air refueling "bridge" that allows the Expeditionary Air Force to deploy around the globe on a moment's notice. The Bloody Hundredth is comprised of the 100th Maintenance Group, the 100th Mission Support Group, and the 100th Operations Group. KC-135 STRATOTANKER The KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refueling capability for the United States Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 60 years. This unique asset enhances the Air Force's capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach. It also provides aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft.
