Marked “lightly, flying” the work is based on the flight-like melodic gestures and monothematic musical form of Chopin’s composition. Snøen (The Snow) Tranquil, yet chaotic, this aleatoric work indicates a suggested number of times each bar is played. The tempo is constant, and the pedal is sustained to smear textures and harmonies like snow heaping up. Award-winning transgender Mexican-American composer, currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mari Esabel Valverde, whose music has been reviewed as “heart-stopping” (BBC Music Magazine) and “of shimmering beauty” (The WholeNote), has composed art songs, chamber music, and works for chorus, orchestra, and wind ensemble. Recent projects include commissions for the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club. Aspiring to create music that emboldens people to unlearn shame, her works center the voices of historically marginalized authors and address questions of gender, sexuality, social justice, and love of the natural world. A native of North Texas, she holds degrees from St. Olaf College, the European American Musical Alliance in Paris, France, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. https://MEValverde.com https://linktr.ee/MariEsabel Welcome to Women’s History Month 2026! Women’s History Month is a project I began to promote the music of women composers, both past and present, on each day of March. I wanted to create something that would remind us all month long of the creative presence and power of women. I aim to highlight women composers who may be unknown to the general public and introduce them to new audiences, sparking further interest in their music and their lives. 2026 is my year to focus on composers connected to Minnesota.
