3 Days in Palo Duro Canyon State Park | Epic Hikes, Wildlife & Rainy Nights

This week we explore Palo Duro Canyon State Park—aka the Grand Canyon of Texas! We spent three nights camping at Hackberry Campground, hiking iconic trails, spotting wildlife, and surviving one seriously rainy night. 🌧️ Our hikes included: The Givens, Spicer & Lowry Trail to the Lighthouse Trail, and Paseo del Rio. Then, Upper and Lower Comanche Trails —all accessible right from camp! We saw everything from trail-loving lizards to curious turkeys and even a fox casually strolling by. And when the coyotes started singing in the distance? Let’s just say it was peak canyon atmosphere. But Palo Duro isn’t just for hikers. If nature’s not your thing, you’ll still find something to love here—like the Texas Outdoor Musical, Shakespeare in the Canyon, painting workshops, or even a 24-hour mountain bike race at the park’s amphitheater and event spaces. There are even primitive backpacking sites for the more adventurous crowd—just four, hike-in only, with no drinking water or open fires allowed (fuel stoves only). Always check weather and trail access ahead of time, especially in canyon conditions where things can change fast. From CCC-built trails to Texas wildlife and dramatic canyon weather, this place surprised us in all the best ways. .
