☕ Brief History of Coffee Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia over 1,000 years ago. According to legend, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats becoming energetic after eating red berries from a certain plant. Curious, he tried them himself — and that is how coffee was first found. From Ethiopia, coffee spread to Yemen, where monks began brewing it as a drink to stay awake during night prayers. Yemen became the first place to roast and brew coffee beans the way we do today. By the 1600s, coffee had reached the Middle East, Turkey, and Europe, where coffeehouses became popular centers for conversation, music, and trade. These early cafés were sometimes called “Schools of the Wise” because people discussed ideas there. In the 1700s, coffee plants spread to Asia, South America, and the Caribbean, turning coffee into a global crop. Countries like Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Vietnam eventually became major coffee producers. Today, coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, loved for its rich flavor and energizing effect. It has grown into an entire culture — from simple brewing to advanced barista skills and specialty coffee.
