St Mary’s University College Teaching Profession Project Seminar 9 - Assessment and Problem Solving in Numeracy Tuesday, 14 May 2024, 4.30pm St Mary’s University College is set to host the ninth in a series of free online seminars arising from its Teaching Profession Project (TPP). On Tuesday, 14 May at 4.30 pm, Geraldine Parks, Senior Lecturer in Education at St Mary’s University College, will chair a discussion on ‘Assessment and Problem Solving in Numeracy’. Geraldine will be joined by panel members: Dr Lorraine Harbison, Dublin City University (DCU); and Dr Shauna McGill, Ulster University (UU). Overview: In this seminar Dr Lorraine Harbison from DCU, Dr Shauna McGill from UU and Geraldine Parks from St Marys University college will discuss the topics of problem solving and assessment in Mathematics. In addition to providing an explanation of what is problem solving and why we need to teach it, the discussion will address the issue of assessment and reveal the outcome of their research project which is an exciting new resource to help teachers with assessing problem solving. Panel members: Dr Lorraine Harbison is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education in the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies at the Institute of Education, Dublin City University. She has a particular interest in researching innovative teaching pedagogies to foster mathematical understanding Dr Shauna McGill has been a Lecturer of Education for 17 years at the School of Education in Ulster University. Her research interests lie within Teacher Education and STEM Learning. Shauna is the Secretary for the Association for the Study of Primary Education (ASPE) and the Chair of the sub- committee for the annual Standing Conference on Teacher Education North and South (Scotens). Current research projects include investigating the impact of mathematical learning outdoors, examining the impact of parents learning mathematics to support their children and a Further Education study involving lecturers of vocational studies and their mathematical perceptions. Geraldine Parks is a Senior Lecturer in Numeracy at St Mary’s University College Belfast. A primary school teacher with extensive experience in Primary Education, Geraldine’s area of research interest is in Maths anxiety and ways to overcome it. Geraldine is interested in the various pedagogies for teaching and has studied Maths mastery for the past 5 years.
