St Mary’s University College Teaching Profession Project Seminar 8 - Maths mastery: Adding value or multiplying problems? Tuesday, 24 October 2023, 4.30pm St Mary’s University College is set to host the eighth in a series of free online seminars arising from its Teaching Profession Project (TPP). On Tuesday, 24 October at 4.30 pm, Geraldine Parks, Senior Lecturer in Education at St Mary’s University College, will chair a discussion on ‘Maths mastery’. Geraldine will be joined by panel members; Julie Hamilton, Caroline Tanton, Emma Cullen and Marianne McKnight. Overview: Trends from international league tables have led to recent debates on Maths mastery. Mastery has been widely introduced in England and other countries, but what is it? Does it work? Does it fit with the Northern Ireland curriculum? Our panel will discuss Maths mastery - the myths and the realities. They will consider the research underpinning a mastery approach, share their journeys of implementing Maths mastery into classrooms here, and use their experience locally and elsewhere to assess whether it could add value to Maths teaching in NI.
