Space for reflection : What is the difference between kindness and niceness ? We often confuse kindness with niceness. Niceness is that thing that makes us act unauthentically, saying yes to others and no to us, not listening to our emotions and believing we are responsable to make others happy at all cost. “Be nice”, they say. “Be strong and hold it together”. “Stop crying”. “Be like this and that”. This conditioning will surely help find a coping system when young but this will surely lead to live the life of others instead of living our life according to our values, priorities and long term goals. Kindness is showing up to ourselves fully and not judging us and rushing to do more that we can carry. It is staying true to ourselves, setting healthy boundaries first with ourselves and then with others and remembering to use our life force and not letting it leak through unhealthy behaviours and destructive habits (addictions and compulsions, staying in toxic environments, people pleaser), mind games (believing every thought that comes to our minds). Being kind to ourselves is choosing what is right for us in the present moment not what’s easy in the short term but unhelpful in the long run. Kindness is rooting for us with understanding, compassion and acceptance of what naturally arises on our path. It is accepting our strengths and flaws all together and instead of becoming critical about our actions we are adjusting our behaviours step by step and becoming the supportive, rooted, responsable adults that can ground most of the time in every life situation. Can you remember one recent situation when you acted nicely, ignoring the signals of the body, following the flow of mind (controlling) and not feeling the heart- centred energy (receptive)? How did you feel during and after that situation? What emotions were present? What needs were hidden beneath those emotions? Do not rush, take your time, stop the video and get back when you are done. Now can you remember one situation when you stood up for yourself, felt unease and tension in the body because of saying what needed to be said? How did you feel inside? What emotions were present? How did you feel after the situation? Stay present with the sensations in the body at that moment. Realise that kindness is feeling unease and discomfort and act according to what brings us closest to the life we want to create for ourselves.
