Romanze is one of the most beloved and internationally known classical guitar pieces. For many years the composer was unknown. Many famous guitarists claimed to have written it. When the late Rico Stover discovered a dated published copy of this piece (1913), the mystery composer was finally identified as Antonio Rubira. The published edition is different from the more familiar popularized editions. Rubira used a more active 16th note arpeggio accompaniment. The harmonies he employs, particularly at the end of the A section, is more creative and interesting than the commonly known editions. The piece ends at the conclusion of the B section, making the form AAB. This piece has appeared under many names, on this Valentine's day perhaps the most appropriate title would be Romance d'Amour.
