Adelaide during the Tour Down Under, or as the locals call it… schoolies for cyclists 🚲🇦🇺 It’s my first time at TDU and honestly, the amount of rides, pop-ups, events and social chaos happening outside the WorldTour racing is overwhelming — in the best way possible. You’re absolutely spoilt for choice. I was given very sensible advice to set the bike up for road group rides while I’m here. Naturally, I couldn't help myself and jumped straight onto a gravel group ride instead. This was the Life In The Peloton Gravel Ride, with Mitch Docker putting together a route showcasing some urban gravel along the River Torrens. Mitch showing up on MTB tyres had me questioning my life choices. The ride rolled out from the MAAP x Specialized ADL26 pop-up at Light Square, fuelled by coffees from Niccolo and hydration from Skratch Labs. Pace was a good tempo, inclusive and semi-supported — but you still needed to stay sharp, stay with the bunch and bring spares. And yes… I ran Continental GP5000s on gravel. Ever wondered how road tyres go off-road? Same here (not really). Couldn’t be bothered changing tyres, risked it for the biscuit, and lived to tell the tale. Had a bit of banter with Ian Boswell — firmly in Zone 1. Energy clearly being banked, which paid off for him at RADL GRVL a few days later. If you’re heading to Adelaide for the Tour Down Under, this is peak TDU energy — gravel, good people, cold beers and questionable tyre choices.
