Pan of Sean and his Brazilian family arriving at the US consulate STORYLINE A Brazilian family delivered a nine-year-old boy to his American father in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, ending a five-year custody battle. Sean Goldman was brought into the US consulate by several of his Brazilian relatives, who had to fight their way through a media scrum to get to the compound''s front door, as dozens of reporters and cameramen swarmed around them. His father, David Goldman of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, was waiting for him inside. Sean was seen crying as his stepfather, Joao Paulo Lins e Silva, and the family lawyer, Sergio Tostes, tried to get him past the journalists in front of the consulate. Guards had to violently push back photographers and TV cameramen. The boy carried his luggage and wore a yellow shirt with the Brazilian flag and Olympic rings underneath. Orna Blum, a representative from the US Embassy in Brazil, had earlier said that Sean''s privacy was the most important thing for all parties involved - so the public handover seemed to contradict this stance. His maternal grandmother, Silvana Bianchi, said it was extremely difficult to hand Sean over to his father. Bianchi wanted to travel with Sean to the United States to help in the transition, but family lawyer Sergio Tostes said her wish was denied by Goldman. Tostes said he had asked the Brazilian government to intervene but authorities said the father''s decision had to be respected. Bianchi and the rest of the boy''s Brazilian relatives left the consulate about an hour after delivering him. Goldman''s New Jersey-based lawyer, Patricia Apy, criticised how the turnover was conducted, saying a secluded location would have been preferable and the public handover caused unnecessary distress to her client''s son. Goldman won a major legal victory late on Tuesday when Brazil''s chief justice upheld a lower court''s ruling that ordered Sean returned to him. Last year Bianchi died in childbirth.
