"In Principle" is inspired by the political philosophy of John Rawls, in particular his thought experiment known as the veil of ignorance and the conception of justice as fairness that follows from it. The song articulates the outcome of the deliberation the third song on the EP tackled: Rawls' two principles of justice, which prioritize equal basic liberties and allow social and economic inequalities only when they benefit the least advantaged and arise under fair conditions of opportunity. Lyrics for "In Principle" VERSE 1 Before we count the gains or losses, We set the bounds we will not cross. A voice unbought, a thought unbound. A place to stand on common ground. CHORUS Some rights remain, whatever may come, No trade, no threat, no greater sum. If any voice is pushed aside, No rule is left that can decide. VERSE 2 Not all outcomes end the same, Not every path escapes its weight. But chances must be maintained, Not granted once, then sealed by fate. CHORUS Allow for differences to remain As long as they lift those below the line. No gain stands right by height alone, It answers for the least in kind. BRIDGE We choose these terms without a name, Unsure of where we'll stand or land. What we accept from anywhere Is all a just world can demand. CHORUS So freedoms stand beyond all trade, And chances widen not by name. Whatever widens outcomes still Must lift the least the same. Not perfect balance, not all the same, But rules we'd claim from any frame. --- LINKS If you are interested in John Rawls' political philosophy, you can start with this entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ra... However, as every good student knows, the best way to study anything seriously is to go straight to the primary sources. In this case, it would be Rawls' "A Theory of Justice": https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978... Rawls' project is not utopian in the naïve sense. It does not assume perfect people or perfect outcomes. Instead, it asks what principles rational agents would choose to govern a society if they were forced to deliberate without knowing their own position within it, without knowledge of their class, talents, wealth, health, or social standing. The aim is not a utopian perfect society, but fairness under uncertainty. PURCHASE ▶ Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GD5VS97K/...
