"We Will Rise" is inspired by the political philosophy of John Rawls, in particular his thought experiment known as the veil of ignorance and the conception of justice as fairness that follows from it. This song functions as a coda to the previous songs on the EP. Drawing loosely on the tradition of workers' songs and collective anthems, it gestures toward unity and shared purpose. It is intentionally more hopeful and more utopian in tone, not as a claim about the world as it is or as it could really be, but as an expression of what motivates the attempt to design fair institutions in the first place. Lyrics for "We Will Rise" VERSE 1 Maybe I'll be the poorest child. Maybe I'll fall and break. Maybe I'll rise with nothing left. What world would I create? VERSE 2 Let every voice be heard. Let every life belong. A just design is one, Where all can grow strong. VERSE 3 We rise as one together. We guard the least and last. The measure of our progress Is how the least surpass. CHORUS A shared design that any life could own. No path divine. No man alone. A shared design, well-ordered, built with care, Where those behind Can rise from what they bear. A shared design that any life could own. No path divine. No man alone. CHORUS A shared design that any life could own. No path divine. No man alone. No path divine. No man alone. No path divine. No man alone. --- LINKS If you are interested in John Rawls' political philosophy, you can start with this entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ra... However, as every good student knows, the best way to study anything seriously is to go straight to the primary sources. In this case, it would be Rawls' "A Theory of Justice": https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978... Rawls' project is not utopian in the naïve sense. It does not assume perfect people or perfect outcomes. Instead, it asks what principles rational agents would choose to govern a society if they were forced to deliberate without knowing their own position within it, without knowledge of their class, talents, wealth, health, or social standing. The aim is not a utopian perfect society, but fairness under uncertainty. PURCHASE ▶ Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GD5VS97K/...
