2-20-2022 I did it again. I ran my 2nd official half marathon at the A1A Fort Lauderdale race and 48th overall! New PR baby (1:50:09, 8:25 per mile)! I had been chasing breaking the 1:50 barrier for some time. The flat surface course definitely helped. My pace was incredible the entire race. I started off much faster (first 2-4 miles, 8:11-8:14 per mile pace) as I had to really push harder because I was bunched in and started all the way in the back. I had a lot of ground to cover and people to pass. I was feeling good despite only getting about two hours of sleep. I was on pace to shatter my previous PR but I gradually started to slow down. My breathing was solid for the most part but there were times I was breathing heavy. My right calf started cramping up around miles 7/8. That scared me because I didn’t want to have to stop, so I had to ease up slightly. It kept happening on and off throughout. My feet were burning. I used the new Brooks Glycerin GTS 19 (first jog) replacements they sent me and they fit way better than the other defective pair I wore for Miami. The weather was very windy, breezy and somewhat cool. It was nice for jogging. This was my second half in two weeks but I’ve done three halves in a week’s span on a few occasions so I’ve trained for this. It’s nice to finally reap the rewards of all the work you put in. The races obviously take a bigger toll on your body but building your endurance, stamina, resistance during training help you overcome it. I liked the the scenic route of the A1A half and the fact that it’s very accurate in distance. The Miami Half is about .15 mi. longer. However, the organization for A1A is a bit sloppy. I was packed in like a sardine all the way in the back. There were no assigned corrals and everyone takes off simultaneously. I had to overexert myself just to zigzag my way around the slower participants. I was behind in getting in line because there was about a 30 minute wait just to pee! There were limited porta potty’s available. Aside from that, it was another memorable experience! I might complete the trifecta and run in the 305 Half Marathon in two weeks. After that, I’ll be done for a while from races. The body needs some rest.
