We have been searching for what we call a "Volcano" ski and the Hagan Core 89 has gotten as close as any backcountry ski to that definition. What is a volcano ski? For us it needs to be damp, versatile and light enough. Early on we were skiing the hardened and irregular snow found on volcanoes in the PNW on light weight carbon skis. We were nearly jostled to death. Not just that but the skis were easily redirected by all the strange snow and ice formations that only seem to be found on Volcanoes. Sidewise icicles resembling WW2 beach defense comes to mind. The Hagan is not the lightest ski for its width but it seems to meet at the perfect intersection of weight and dampness. I've taken it on Rainier twice plus Antisana and Chimborazo. It's easy to ski, which comes in handy when you're mentally and physically spent. It's not burdensome on your backpack and it doesn't require a big boot to drive. Like I said, for us it's the perfect Volcano ski.
