okay so it is 5:16 AM and i am very tired and i have so many exams but anyways we had an assignment in our composition class where we had to choose a scene or image and write a score around it. i decided to do shiori's elevator scene from revolutionary girl utena episode 17 because i love shiori she is a bit insane Erm..... let me find my notes for the assignment submission. also i know the mixing is bad do you know how hard it is to mix orchestral stuff I chose to use a scene from Revolutionary Girl Utena’s 17th Episode “The Thorns of Death” as the basis for this composition. RGU was a pivotal series to my adolescence, and I take a great amount of influence from its composer Shinkichi Mitsumune. This scene, of course, was mostly devoid of music beyond some basic atmospheric background noise (which I removed). The scene centers Shiori, a side character, going though the magical therapy elevator that brings out the darkest aspects of your personality before being made into a Black Rose duelist. I’m not going to explain what any of that means for both of our sakes. I’ve always been struck by Shiori’s resentment and jealousy of Juri, the highly accomplished student council member who was also Shiori’s best friend. This scene takes place right after Shiori discovers Juri has secretly been in love with her the whole time, and features Shiori spiralling out of control because of her insecurity. I tried to reflect those feelings of resentment, insecurity, and envy through very dissonant harmonic colours and intense dynamic swells. This piece is more or less divided into two sections: one section for the elevator scene, and one section for the confrontation between Shiori and Juri. For the elevator scene, I made particular use of descending scales to both represent Shiori’s declining emotional state as well as the literal descending of the elevator. I also used a theme from the actual soundtrack (Shi no Aphrodite) often associated with these two characters and corrupted it to represent Shiori’s mind being twisted. The confrontation section is more percussive and outright aggressive, with the most notable moment being when Shiori pulls a sword from Juri’s chest. wow i can write haha cool. um we had to choose a composer to reference between two options so i opted for some bernard hermann nachos. idk if it worked honestly yass yass yass shiori takatsuki juri arisugawa
