On 30 May 1967 the eastern region of Nigeria, predominantly populated by the Igbo people unilaterally seceded, forming the Republic of Biafra under the region’s governor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The resulting Nigerian Civil War claimed almost 2 million lives, three quarters of whom were children, before Nigerian victory in 1970. Alongside the Vietnam War, the Nigerian Civil War was one of the first major conflicts to be televised around the world.
