I. Moderato e risoluto 00:01 II. Andante non troppo quasi Moderato 14:14 III. Scherzo. Allegro giocoso 23:51 IV. Finale. Allegro vivace 27:01 The Grand Piano Sonata in G Major Op. 37 was written by P. I. Tchaikovsky in 1878 and is dedicated to the pianist Karl Klindworth. This is the largest-scale work of the composer for solo piano. The author continues here the traditions of the great romantic sonata of the Schumann type. The monumentality of the form and the brilliant decorative manner of piano writing bring the sonata closer to the works of the concert genre. It could be called, just as Schumann titled one of his sonatas, "A concerto without an orchestra." While there is a presence of the influence of Schumann's piano writing, this composition is marked by a bright original manner of Tchaikovsky's piano writing. The sonata is the first outstanding work of this genre in Russian music and has many artistic merits, but is not known to a wide audience. It was first performed in Moscow on November 2,, 1879 by Nikolai Rubinstein.
