An ode to the past, he believes in the spirituality of his songs because they will always “bring light to darkness”. Werner Ferreira, also known as Veraz, is a local reggae and rock artist who has been quite a phenomenon in the South African music industry. He has been explained by many as “a new artist with an amazingly fresh, original and revolutionary sound” offering something rather different for a boy from Vereeniging. Gigging all around Johannesburg from the hippest venues to the humblest of ghetto’s (Soweto, Kliptown, Eldorado Park and the infamous Hillbrow) as well as performing with some of South Africa’s best (Prime Circle, the Rasta Rebels, Tidal Waves, Josie Field and Arno Carstens). 2010 saw Ferreira performing alongside international superstar Ziggy Marley at the opening of the South African Cup and Jah Seed. Finding it spiritually enticing to stand solo and just relay the music, Veraz is influenced by his family's love for many musical genres, particularly reggae, gospel and rock and draws inspiration from his loyal audience and country. He released his 1st album in 2009 titled “From Joburg to Jamaica” which offered a fresh and somewhat contemporary twist, selling over 3000 copies. Living in Brazil since 2013, has brought his music to a vocal differential, with personality and innovation. Experimenting in many different cultures across Africa and Europe, and joining with top quality musicians, has essentially culminated into a unique and charismatic world music band “Sulsouth”. With his core values and love for making music, the band is essentially the biggest part of the music. Says Veraz… “My band is like my body, the mind cannot function without it”. The Band consists of Gregs, “My Ghetto Superstar” (who is Khoi San from the Kalahari) and Quinton “The Man Who Speaks with His Hands”, a truly amazing combination. Currently Veraz is working on an Afrikaans reggae album and although he realizes that it won't be an easy album to write, he is determined, “It’s something that I feel I have to do”. Showcasing his versatility singing in English, Portuguese and Afrikaans, his native language, with nuances and influences from Bob Marley and UB40 to Brazilian mastery such as Raul Seixas, Milton Nascimento and Naná Vasconcelos as his inspiration, there is no doubt that the album will be an elevated blend of cross culture charm.
