Classic opening bids are made with 13 or more points, and it’s also possible to open with fewer than 13 if we have a 6‑card (or longer) suit. But when the bidding comes PASS – PASS – PASS (everybody passes), then the Rule of 15 comes into play — it guides when to open light with fewer than 13 points, giving priority to a spade suit.
