Robert Hausam - Moving to "Real" International Patient Summary (IPS) Implementations | DevDays 2024

The IPS provides essential healthcare information for an unplanned or other clinical encounter. Many IPS implementations focus on ""patient mediated"" data exchange, where the patient controls their clinical data and authorizes data access by the receiving clinician, potentially providing the data exchange medium via their personal device. Building on the FHIR IG, key workflow components for IPS implementation include: data source (e.g., EHR/CDR), secure data transmission from originating to receiving clinician/system, data access authorization, and received data viewing. Significant recent progress has been made on examples and reference implementations, including: (a) HAPI FHIR server IPS generation via $summary, (b) SMART Health Links, and (4) IPS viewers.; This presentation shows these components working together as an end-to-end ""patient mediated"" IPS workflow-and ultimately a potential source or an inspiration for future real-world IPS implementations.
