The Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line switches from 750 V DC third rail power (used from Grand Central Terminal through shared trackage with the Harlem Line) to 12.5 kV 60 Hz AC overhead catenary in the section between Mount Vernon East and Pelham stations in New York. This transition occurs at normal track speed, with a quarter-mile overlap where both systems are present to allow smooth changeover: inbound trains (toward Grand Central) lower their pantographs, while outbound trains raise them, as the third rail collector shoes remain in position throughout. The current location, implemented in the early 1990s, replaced an older transition point near Woodlawn Junction to shift the switch to flatter track, avoid momentum issues on grades, and eliminate the need to maintain catenary under several low bridges in downtown Mount Vernon. This dual-system capability enables efficient operation on the New Haven Line's hybrid electrified infrastructure. #timestamp : 00:00 Park Ave viaduct 01:00 Harlem - 125th St Station 02:23 St Thomas Church tower 03:00 Harlem River Bridge 03:45 Mott Haven Junction 05:10 Melrose Station 06:57 Tremint Station 08:20 Fordham Station 10:35 Botanical Garden Station 11:34 Wiiliamsbridge Station 12:46 Woodlawn Station 13:10 Woodlawn Junction 15:15 Mt Vernon East 17:50 Third rail power ends 18:20 Pelham Station #train #railroad #trainstation #passengertrain #metronorth #newhavenline #thirdrail #catenary
