Zero-carbon buildings will soon be the norm. Embodied carbon is now a significant factor (~50%) in mapping architecture's carbon footprint. In this session (recorded October 2025 at BUILDEX Alberta), attendees learned how to make carbon-smart choices in the design phase to enable zero-carbon buildings for long-term operational savings. Shafraaz Kaba shared how the built environment can have a significant influence on lowering our industry's carbon emissions and how this opportunity can also save project costs using principles of Lean culture and collaboration. Discover tips, tools and tricks on how to source and select materials and major building systems and how they may have long-term implications for operational carbon as well. About the speaker: Shafraaz is a Registered Architect and Green Building Specialist, experienced in zero-carbon adaptation strategies with over 26 years’ experience with sustainable design. Shafraaz is well-known for his commitment to sustainable strategies and integrated, community-based, collaborative design and has led community and stakeholder engagement and facilitation for many clients. He was co-chair and a founding member of the Energy Transition and Climate Resilience Committee of Council for Edmonton, where he helped develop the Community Energy Transition Strategy and Action Plan. Currently, he is chair of the Emissions Neutral Building Information Exchange, which hopes to freely share ideas, case studies, and expertise on how to achieve zero-carbon architecture.
