We're off to visit Casa Blanca today, an ancient Maya site in Chalchuapa, El Salvador. Tata Renato is once again my guide and travelling companion. While occupation of the site began more than 3,000 years ago, Maya structures are dated to about 700 BCE. The archaeological remains show evidence of influences from the Olmecs, Teotihuacan, Kaminaljuyu, and Mixe-Zoque of Izapa. The site was abandoned after the eruption of the Ilopango Volcano around 500 CE. This area was known for its production of indigo dyes, and still is today as you'll see in the video. Casa Blanca was named for the coffee plantation that operated here before the El Salvador government took over the site and established the archaeological zone. It is part of the Chalchuapa Archaeological Zone, which incorporates the El Trapiche Zone. In the latter zone lie the ruins of Tazumal. We'll visit that in the next video. Thanks for watching!
