Hi everyone! In this video lecture we have discussed some definitions of critical discourse analysis, principles of critical discourse analysis, and aims of critical discourse analysis Definition Critical Discourse Analysis is a type of discourse analysis research that primarily studies the way social power abuse, dominance and inequality are enacted, reproduced and resisted by text and talk in the socio-political context. (Van Dijk 2004) What is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)? Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a method of examining language that aims to uncover how power, dominance, and inequality are enacted, reproduced, and resisted through discourse. It is a problem-oriented approach that seeks to understand and critique the role of discourse in the production and maintenance of social injustice. Unlike more neutral forms of linguistic analysis, CDA is explicitly political and committed to revealing the hidden ideologies and power relations that shape texts and conversations. It draws from multiple disciplines, including linguistics, sociology, philosophy, and political science. CDA assumes that discourse is both shaped by social structures and helps shape those structures in return. It examines how language is used in specific contexts—such as media, politics, education, and law—to reinforce the interests of dominant groups and marginalize others.
