Goddess Biso Bandara is a legendary figure associated with Kaudulla Wewa in the Polonnaruwa District. According to local folklore, she is believed to have sacrificed herself during the construction of the tank to stabilize the bund when it repeatedly failed. Because of this act, she is revered by local communities as a protective goddess of Kaudulla Lake. Historically, Kaudulla Wewa was built during the reign of King Mahasen of Anuradhapura in the 3rd century AD, but the story of Biso Bandara remains an important cultural legend connected with the reservoir. Today, Kaudulla Wewa is part of the irrigation network that will be supplemented by the North Central Province Canal Project, improving water supply to the surrounding cascade systems and agricultural lands.
