Queen Biso Bandara, who is traditionally associated with the construction of Kaudulla Wewa, is linked in local legend to the completion of the tank during the reign of King Mahasen of Anuradhapura. According to folklore, when the bund of Kaudulla Tank repeatedly failed during construction, Queen Biso Bandara sacrificed herself to stabilize it. After this event, the reservoir was said to have been successfully completed. While the tank is historically attributed to King Mahasen (3rd century AD), the story of Biso Bandara remains an important cultural legend associated with the reservoir. Today, Kaudulla Wewa forms part of the irrigation system that will be supplemented by the North Central Province Canal Project.
