Campus Energy 2026: Developing a Utility-Owned Thermal Energy Network in NCY

Brittni Provencher (Con Edison), Charlie Marino (WSP), and Adam Shelly (Ecosystem), share the story of the Rockefeller Center UTEN pilot. This innovative project captures waste heat from the central chilled water plant at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and redistributes it to three major office buildings through an ultra low temperature hot water network - displacing more than 57,000 MMBtu of steam each year. Since its early preview at CampusEnergy2025, the project has moved through full engineering design, uncovering valuable lessons beyond the conceptual phase. The team will discuss stakeholder coordination, designing within tight mechanical spaces, tackling major infrastructure challenges, and navigating regulatory guidance from the New York State Public Service Commission.
