The work centers on the General during a period of idleness—when there is nothing immediate to be done—and on the frustration his troops feel as they are forced to wait. The piece opens with a sense of stillness, like unmoving water, symbolizing a deep yearning for motion. A slow waltz gradually emerges, setting the pacing, but the feeling of boredom and restlessness quickly rises. Eventually, that tension reaches a breaking point as the General and his troops demand action, only for the higher command to urge patience once more. The General of the Grey Wardens reinforces the virtue of patience—not simply in waiting for a delayed reward, but in resisting the urge to force outcomes through effort alone. All things come in God’s timing, not our own. Our responsibility is to trust in that timing and honor it.
