Across the East African region, mobile money is now part of everyday life. In Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, over 70% of adults actively use mobile money services, with millions sending, receiving, saving and even investing money entirely through their phones. Platforms like M-Pesa and Tigo Pesa aren’t just convenient, they’re changing how people plan, spend, and grow their finances. Women, in particular, are benefiting in powerful ways. Mobile money gives them direct control over income, business transactions and family finances, opening opportunities for savings, micro-investments and wealth building, often faster than traditional banking systems could allow. We explore how these digital tools are changing everyday financial behaviour, helping people plan for the future, and what it all means for building wealth and independence in a fast-moving, digital economy.
