Every week in my clinic, patients ask me to order a cardiac calcium score. Sometimes this is a great and appropriate test! But many also fall into one of two completely different camps: they are either high-risk and using the scan to delay the inevitable, or they are ultra-healthy and using it to chase an impossible level of certainty. In this video, we break down the behavioral psychology of why we over-test our bodies. For the patient with climbing cholesterol and creeping blood pressure, asking for a scan is often just a psychological delay tactic. When the warning signs are already flashing, ordering another test is just an expensive way to procrastinate making real lifestyle changes or starting a statin. On the flip side, we look at the highly optimized patient who uses the CT scanner as a high-tech and possibly harmful method to cure their health anxiety. Ultimately, a medical test should only be used to answer a specific question that changes your treatment plan—not to manage your psychology. Sometimes, the most important signals about your health are already sitting right in front of you.
