Reducing current consumption is critical to an off-grid ham radio station on solar power. In this episode we review whether or not a QRP radio like the Icom IC-705 with an amplifier (DIY599 PA500) is more efficient than a QRO rig like the Yaesu FT-891 on its own. We specifically want to understand receive current load, transmit load or current draw and efficiency of the transmitter at certain watts. We traveled to Hailuoto Island for some portable ham radio and to answer the efficiency question. We took along the 2x 100 watt Powerfilm FM16-6000LT solar panels, a Yaesu FT-891 & 576wh Solar Generator, and an Icom IC-705, DIY599 PA600 amplifier and a 256 watt hour solar generator. The goal was to test which station was more energy efficient, while running on solar power. With the lessons learned, it is now possible to build an incredibly efficient portable ham radio station for off grid, or grid down ham radio 73 Julian #oh8stn Share video url: • Portable Ham Radio on Solar Power: Cu...
