Biodiversity is degrading at alarming rates around the world and people living in biodiversity-rich areas often bear the heaviest costs of its loss and of inequitable conservation efforts. Biodiversity credits – or biocredits – are emerging as a tradeable unit of biodiversity that can incentivise nature conservation and restoration. IIED partnered with EcoTrust Uganda in the northern Albertine rift region of Uganda to work with communities to set up a high integrity biocredit scheme. Communities living in the area had full involvement in the scheme’s design, management and implementation. Biocredits are a measurable and credible way for companies and individuals to invest in nature. Meanwhile, communities gain from the benefits that nature provides to wellbeing, livelihoods and culture. For practitioners this video shares a valuable example of a scheme that could be replicated and developed in other places. Biocredits designed, governed and/or supplied by Indigenous Peoples and local communities can create an innovative way to fund locally-led action. This project is funded by the UK government through the Darwin Initiative. The series of videos were produced by Here Now Films and Afro Dreams.
