Prelude and Fugue No. 5 in D (Book 2)

Another unique creation by Bach. An ascending outline of the tonic chord announces the majestic start to the Prelude. In fact, there is much to this introductory music and its stately response which reminds us of the numerous sonatas Scarlatti is famous for. It is a lot of fun to play including the rollicking return to the A section. In contrast to this more or less concerto form, comes a rather straight-laced fugue. The start of theme, curiously, implies G major (IV) before returning the proceedings to D major (I). The strettos provide a pleasant vertical dimension to the fugue subject in the midst of generally consistent rhythmic movement.
