《淨空法師 - 學佛答問》 地點：新加坡佛教居士林 日期：2000/9/6 編號：第十二集 檔名：21-90-0012 --- 　　問：「念佛二十分鐘，不打妄想，沒有妄念，算不算功夫成片？能否往生極樂世界？」 　　答：二十分鐘之後妄想又起來了，怎麼辦？人在臨終念佛能有二十分鐘不打妄想，沒有妄念，決定往生。所以這要看在什麼時候，平常能保持就非常好，保持的時間愈久愈好，總在臨終時用得上力。平常我們是訓練、練兵，臨終是打仗，能不能成就，關鍵在臨終的剎那。因此我們不能不修福，不能不積德，如果不修福、不積德，臨命終時，冤親債主來擾亂，這一生念佛往生的機會全都被障礙了。這種情形，早年我在圓山臨濟寺出家剃度時，臨濟寺有個念佛會，念佛會的副會長林道奇居士，福州人，是一位非常虔誠的佛教徒。念佛會每個星期大家在臨濟寺念佛一天，林居士當維那，他念得很好，法器也敲得不錯。臨命終時，魔障現前，聽到佛號就討厭，貪生怕死，魔境現前，錯亂了。 　　我們看到許多念佛同修到老年的時候，得老人痴呆症，神志不清，這樣不能往生。往生西方極樂世界，第一個條件是神志清楚，人走的時候清清楚楚、明明白白，這是福報。我們修福，現在不要享，臨命終時再享福；享什麼福？清清楚楚、明明白白，享這個福。人在臨終時清楚、明白，縱然不求生西方極樂世界，決定不墮三惡道。諸位想想，哪有明白人到三惡道投胎？不可能的。到三惡道投胎，都是糊裡糊塗去的，神志不清才會到三惡道，所以平常積功累德、斷惡修善比什麼都重要。功夫成片，決定是要放下萬緣，我們的功夫才能夠成片。 Question: "If one recites Buddha's name for twenty minutes without any wandering thoughts, does it count as successful practice? Can one attain rebirth in the Pure Land?" Answer: What matters is whether one can maintain focus during the critical moment of death. If one can recite Buddha's name without wandering thoughts for twenty minutes, it's commendable. However, the key lies in the moment of death. We train and accumulate merits throughout our lives, preparing for the battle at the moment of death. Therefore, it's crucial to cultivate virtues and merits continuously. If one neglects this practice, disturbances from past karma might hinder rebirth in the Pure Land, despite a lifetime of reciting Buddha's name. An example is Mr. Lin Daoqi, a devout Buddhist who led a Buddha recitation group. Despite his sincere practice, when facing death, he was disturbed by demonic influences, fearing death and losing clarity of mind. Many practitioners of Buddha recitation, upon reaching old age, suffer from dementia, losing clarity of mind, which hinders their ability to attain rebirth in the Pure Land. The primary condition for rebirth in the Pure Land is to have a clear and lucid mind at the moment of death. Therefore, instead of indulging in worldly pleasures now, we should focus on accumulating merits for a clear and conscious departure at the end of life. Even if rebirth in the Pure Land is not sought, maintaining clarity of mind ensures avoidance of rebirth in the three lower realms. It's inconceivable for a clear-minded person to be reborn in the lower realms. Therefore, it's crucial to cultivate virtues and accumulate merits to ensure a clear and conscious departure from this world, which is the most important factor for attaining rebirth in the Pure Land.
