A Chinese gentleman walked into the HCPA hall and excitedly asked me, "Are you from Shijiazhuang?" When I said no, he quickly followed with, "Where are the Shijiazhuang people?" He was eager to learn about the school so he could send the information to his sister in Shijiazhuang as a possible opportunity for his nephew. I never imagined that our concert might also help SFLS recruit students here in the U.S.! 2. Another special moment involved Tianyu, the student composer. The Chinese conductor, Ms. Fan, asked if we could highlight Tianyu during his composition. Mr. Sharp graciously agreed and arranged for Tianyu to switch seats with our HHS concertmaster during Peach Blossom Spring. Later, we realized Tianyu had been seated in the first chair position throughout rehearsal. When we clarified that we only intended to highlight him for his piece, we learned that our concertmaster had voluntarily offered her seat to Tianyu. Her humility and hospitality in welcoming 25 musicians who traveled from China—many at great personal expense—was truly touching and reflects the character of our students. 3. An elderly couple in their 70s was deeply moved by the concert. The husband was so excited afterward that he chatted warmly with everyone on the way out—even though he speaks very little English. Later that evening, his wife called to share how touched she was to hear the Chinese National Anthem, and then added how meaningful it was to hear the American National Anthem afterward. For them, it was a powerful reminder that while one may have a homeland of origin, the United States is a place where diversity and different cultures can be celebrated openly and proudly. Thanks for everyone who came and supported.
